M√ľnster

M√ľnster
M√ľnster is a multi-faceted city. It is a city of science and learning, the City of Westphalian Peace, the capital city of bicycles and Germany‚Äôs Climate Protection Capital. Westphalia‚Äôs longstanding regional capital is a young city, not least thanks to around 47,000 students. It is an outstanding place to live, work, learn and research. It is a place where urban culture, municipal diversity and first-class rural recreation intersect and have a mutually enhancing effect.

History
M√ľnster‚Äôs roots can be traced back to the 6th century AD. However, the city officially came into existence in 793, when Frisian missionary Liudger founded the "Monasterium" cloister. M√ľnster became a cathedral city as early as 805, and the city remains an active centre of the Roman-Catholic church.

Peace of Westphalia
The Peace of Westphalia treaties were signed and sealed in M√ľnster and Osnabr√ľck on 24th October 1648. They ended a battle for political and religious supremacy in Central Europe, which had lasted for thirty years and resulted in unimaginable suffering, particularly for the German population. The Peace of Westphalia imposed international law. It was the first time in European history that a war had been ended via diplomatic channels at the negotiation table, as opposed to military actions on the battlefield.

City of science
M√ľnster is a city of science and learning. Its eight universities offer a broad range of subjects. The city is home to the Westphalian Wilhelms University of M√ľnster (WWU), one of Germany‚Äôs largest universities. The cluster of excellence "Politics and Religion‚ÄĚ, which was created in 2008, is one example of the outstanding research going on at this university. The University of Applied Sciences in M√ľnster is one of the most dedicated of its kind in terms of research. M√ľnster‚Äôs universities and scientific institutions, such as the Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Biomedicine, the Leibniz Institute for Arteriosclerosis Research and the Center for NanoTechnology (CeNTec), form a scientific network which carries out teaching and research in over 500 fields.
